Yankee Jim's suspension bridge. You actually get to drive
over this! If you have a lot of people in you car you may want to have
them walk separately!
Shirt Tail Creek enters at the North Fork at put in. A
miner was discovered here prospecting for gold with only his shirt on -
hence the name.
Looking downstream from the bridge is the wake up call. At
low flows the left side has more water.
After the first half mile, below the Bunch Canyon Rapid
the river mellows out for a while. Farther down are many more fun rapids.
On the curves try staying to the inside of the curves to avoid going over
ledge drops on the outside of the bend.
A group of kayakers makes it down the Bunch Canyon rapid.
A sneak route on far river right is the least obstructed route. Just when
you think you've done it, there is a pour over rock & hole on the right to
catch the unwary.
This breaking wave has the biggest punch on the run and
can turn over kayakers and small rafts. It is easily skirted on the left
though. A swim at this point could get knarly as the next rapid comes
soon. See below.
About 4 miles from put-in is a section of rapids with
rocks and holes.
About a mile below the Ponderosa Bridge is a nearly river
wide ledge and hole we call Big Dummy. It's real good at generating
swimmers. The sneak route on river right has become more difficult over
the years because of trees growing there. But if you go somewhat left of
center there is a tongue that will carry you through ok.
After negotiating a section with lots of trees growing in
the river, the North Fork gets quite relaxing to take-out.
